Thailand is no longer the open cannabis market it was between 2022 and mid-2025. Since late June 2025 cannabis flower is sold for medical use only: you need a prescription from a licensed medical professional, and a shop may not sell to a walk-in customer without one.

What changed in 2025

The Ministry of Public Health issued the announcement Controlled Herb (Cannabis), B.E. 2568 (2025). According to the Government Public Relations Department, the new rules took effect on 26 June 2025:

  • Prescription only. Medical access requires an authorized prescription, limited to a 30-day supply.
  • Licensed professionals only. Patients obtain cannabis through a licensed medical professional; sales are limited to doctors and licensed medical professionals.
  • No vending machines, no online sales.
  • No advertising of cannabis in any form.
  • No sales near sensitive places such as temples, dormitories, public parks, zoos and fun parks.

What it means for a visitor in 2026

  • A shop with a cannabis sign is not a place where a tourist can simply buy. Without a prescription from a licensed professional, a purchase is outside the rules.
  • A prescription covers at most a 30-day supply.
  • Online and vending-machine sales are not allowed, so a delivery offer is not a legal route.
  • Rules on possession, public use and taking cannabis across a border are separate questions — see the Thailand guide on 420.camp for the current rule on each, with its source and review date.
